East End, Saint George Island State Park. End of the road for two-wheel drive. The home made sign on the right points towards a strand of alternating sand and asphalt that leads about four miles to a parking lot at the far eastern tip of the island. To the right is road which is being paved but as of June 1997 leads to a dead end a couple of miles up.
The state park east of the second cluster of pavillions is a narrow, pancake flat, strip of desert and marsh wedged between the Gulf and the Saint George Sound. It is lonely and serene.
