"St. George Island-The Uncommon Florida" reads the sign that greets you as you descend the bridge into the central commercial sector of the island. Behind the palm trees looms the giant blue doorknob that is the island's most prominent landmark and tallest structure.

The island has two gas stations, one motel, five or six restaurants, and a handful of other small businesses all located in the six block area near the bridge. As one local puts it "85 miles from the nearest (aluminum-clad chain discount store)...thank God".
